Tech:NYC’s Statement Following New York’s Reported Executive Order Pausing Large-Scale Data Center Construction

July 14, 2026

Tech:NYC released the following statement in response to New York’s reported Executive Order pausing large-scale data center construction:

“Technology is a cornerstone of New York’s economy, driving investment, job creation, and innovation across nearly every industry. As demand for computing capacity continues to grow, it’s critical that New York seizes this economic opportunity while at the same time ensuring that everyone across our state benefits.

We appreciate Governor Hochul’s approach to addressing the complex questions surrounding large-scale data centers. Energy demand, grid capacity, and community impacts deserve careful consideration, and we’re encouraged that the Executive Order builds on the important work already underway across state agencies.

We believe that any pause is harmful and that, in any event, 12 months is far too long, and will have the negative impact of encouraging companies to move their investments elsewhere instead of working with communities and state agencies on plans to keep energy affordable and reliable. Over the following months, we look forward to continuing to work with the Governor and policymakers to address concerns about data centers while ensuring the state remains a leader in the industries that will drive the next generation of economic growth.”
