Tech:NYC Statement on New Cloud Computing Legislation (Intro 540)
September 25, 2025
Tech:NYC released the following statement after the passage of Intro 540 by the City Council today.
Tech:NYC applauds the passage of Intro 540, which would require the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) to evaluate the feasibility of adoption of a cloud computing policy for city technology systems. By embracing cloud computing, New York City can modernize its government, improve city services, and secure its economic future.
This initiative is a great example of how tech can support New York City’s needs – a common-sense tool for cost-effective operations that has already been adopted by many cities, states, and the federal government. Cloud computing offers clear benefits for government agencies, including significant budgetary savings by eliminating the need for costly physical hardware and on-premise data centers, while only paying for capacity used. Beyond savings, cloud services are a fundamental driver of modern productivity and resilience. They enable more effective delivery of public services and foster a stronger pipeline of tech talent, ensuring that all New Yorkers can benefit from the opportunities of the digital age.
We want to thank the sponsor of the bill, Council Member Justin Brannan, for his leadership in advancing this crucial legislation, and to the full City Council for passing this important bill.
